How to install x2go on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS x64 server

Yeah I already hear you – why would anyone want a GUI on server machine. Well I do as I’m very used to Windows environment and I understand that it’s might not be as secure as the raw console only server but…

Anyway – here is a little how to install the x2go on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS x64 server. To those who are not familiar with x2go – it’s sort of Remote desktop for Linux – it doesn’t work so flawlessly as on Windows but it’s free :).

Instructions:

1) we need to install GUI environment:

sudo apt-get install gnome

2) we also need to install python:

sudo apt-get install python-software-properties

3) then we need to add x2go repository:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:x2go/stable

4) update your package information with newly added repository

sudo apt-get update

5) Install the x2go server:

sudo apt-get install x2goserver x2goserver-xsession

6) reboot the server:

sudo reboot

Yeah I already hear the yelling – Linux does not need to be rebooted, well whatever – just to be sure 😉
7) profit! 🙂
